Full Day Lisbon and Sintra

In the morning, you will tour delightful Lisbon. You will first travel to the Belem quarter, where you will find many beautiful and historical monuments from the 15th and 16th centuries. A brief photo stop will be made outside the Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which marks the point of departure of some of the Portuguese maritime explorations. You will also see the nearby Monument to the Discoveries (Padrao dos Descobrimentos), built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the "death" of Prince Henry the Navigator.

Next, you will visit the Church of St. Jerome Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of the Manueline style of architecture. You will then visit the Coach Museum (Museu dos Coches), housed in the old Horse Riding Arena of the former Royal Palace, now the official residence of the president of Portugal. It is home to one of the most important collections of old carriages in the world.

Following the river, you will drive to the Alfama, an old and traditional district, where you will have the opportunity to walk in its narrow cobblestone streets, and visit a handicraft shop. There you'll have the opportunity to taste an aperitif of Port wine.

A drive through the downtown (Baixa) area will allow you to admire the most important squares of Lisbon, such as the monumental Trade Square (Praca do Comercio), Rossio Square, the heart of Lisbon, and the symbolic Restauradores Square.

You will then be driven along the Liberdade Avenue, the boulevard of Lisbon, to finish your morning segment at Pombal Square. Here, you will have free time to purchase lunch on your own, shop, or both.

In the afternoon, you will depart Lisbon and travel to the mountainous location of Sintra, approximately 15 miles north of Lisbon. Upon arrival, you will visit the National Palace of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The palace is perhaps the best-preserved Royal Palace in Portugal, due to its being inhabited almost continuously from the early 15th to the late 19th century.

You will have a guided tour followed by free time to explore the handicraft stores or the famous sweets of Sintra.

Departing Sintra, you will take a different route, going west to Cabo da Roca (the most westerly point of Europe) before continuing along the coast, passing the famous Guincho beach on the way to Cascais. Driving through the town, you will be able to see the Boca do Inferno wave feature and the magnificent panorama over the Bay of Cascais and adjoining coastline. On return to Lisbon, you'll pass by Estoril, home to the famous Casino.

Please Note: On Mondays, the St. Jerome Monastery and the Coach Museum are closed, and will be replaced with a visit to the Ajuda National Palace or the museum Medeiros e Almeida. On Wednesdays, the Palace in Sintra is closed, and will be replaced with a visit to the Queluz Palace.
